how to connect wireless headphones to tv without bluetooth

If you have wireless headphones, you can connect them to your TV wirelessly by connecting them to your TV's headphone jack. When connected through the headphone jack, a set of wired headphones will still be used for sound.

A headphone jack has 4 wires, and there is one "line out" and 3 normal headphone jacks. From the headphone jack, you can get one line out and two headphone jacks. There are three different things that can be connected to these two jacks: a microphone, a television remote control to control the television itself (no sound), and a music player that can stream music from your own device.

If you listen to voice from the tv itself, or if you do not want to use this line-out for anything else but headphones, then your only option is to connect your headphones directly into the tv's 3.5mm "stereo mini plug" jack.

In another article, I described how to connect your headphones directly into the TV's headphone jack.

In this article, I will describe how to connect wireless headphones to the TV wirelessly, without having them connected through a separate device such as a Bluetooth headset or wireless transmitter/receiver. Please refer what I wrote about connecting your wireless headphones:How to Connect Wireless Headphones To Your TV Wirelessly Without A Receiver/Transmitter | How-To Geek.

(The following is a combination of my own research and emailing with Sony about this matter)

I am assuming that you already have wired headphones that are compatible with your TV's headphone jack.

As you know, there are 4 wires coming out from the TV's headphone jack: 1 line out and 3 normal headphone jacks. In order to use headphones wirelessly, you need to plug the headphones into a transmitter, then connect the transmitter to the headphone jack using one of these wires as an antenna.

I have found that you can use either the line-out or bass/5v/ground wire (which usually has red colored tip) as antenna, with no difference in sound quality. However, Sony recommended using bass/5v/ground wire for this purpose because it is more resistant to interference. So if possible, use this wire as your antenna instead of using the line-out.

If your transmitter only has a single headphone jack, you can actually connect it directly to the headphone jack coming from the TV without using any of the 4 wires to connect the transmitter to your TV. However, in this case you need to manually turn on/off your headphones and make sure they are connected by pressing buttons on both transmitter and receiver. Some newer devices have a "Auto On" / "Auto Off" feature that can do this automatically.

In case your device has two headphone jacks, you may be able to use the line-out wire as one headphone jack while the other wire will be used for microphone (if there is an extra microphone jack on your device).

For this purpose, Sony recommended using the bass/5v/ground wire for the second headphone jack.

If your device has two headphone jacks, you can use one of them as microphone by connecting it to the line-out wire(bass/5v/ground).

This approach (using extra microphone jack) is also useful in case your transmitter only has a single headphone jack and you have to use a cable with two headphone jacks to connect it. In that case, connect one wire as antenna and other wire as audio out/microphone. Then you can connect your headphones to one of the headphone jacks on this cable, and microphone to another one.
